Laser Galvo Stereo Audio Visualizer
I really love the patterns you can get on an oscilloscope by feeding in a stereo audio signal in XY mode. There's even music made to particularly take advantage of this. In my living room, on the table with my stereo setup I have an oscilloscope that's setup to turn on whenever audio is playing, through my home-assistant setup.
Now it would be really fun to project a similar design much larger. Turns out, you can get some very cheap laser galvos on ebay. These serve to make light shows by precisely controlling the angular deviation of a laser beam along orthogonal axes. Through driving these with stereo audio, we can project a similar pattern far out.
The electronics for this turn out to be pretty simple. An AC/DC power converter to get the voltages the galvo need. An then an extra voltage regulator to drive some small micrphones and an audio amplifier.
Overall this works quite well, but the alignment is tricky. Also the first few laser modules I got off ebay were actually pulsed at high frequency but this was visible with the rapid beam motion
With a new module its a lot smoother, though still doesn't quite play well with camera framerates.
Now I just need to add a box to it, I'm working on the design but it's a bit on the backburner. Will probably just 3D print something in the end.
